ATM: European Beech

Walter,

The buds on this beech are about to burst and I always wanted some advice on it. Without a doubt it needs to be pruned and needs a new pot. The nebari needs work, but the biggest problem (as I see it at least) is the two "arms" coming off of the trunk (see last photo).

Your comments....

Thank you

Robert

Robet, cut them off.
They don't fit the rest of the design. It is a rather naturalistic beech. While the two arms are natural they are doing the design no good.

When you cut them off your beech will look quite leggy. The trunk is clearly too long.
I would recommend an airlayer to considerably shorten the trunk. Now is a very good time to do the airlayer.

best regards

Since Walter has made his comments I hope it is safe to chime in.
The virtual shows a bend on the lower portion of the trunk that is not in the actual tree. Why? I think the actual tree has graceful movement, and once it is layered to reduce size and get everything into proportion I think this will be a very pleasing bonsai.

I think I would try Walter's suggestion of layering off the top, but rather than cutting off the "arms" I might do the layer above them in order to use them to create a broom style with the lower portion of the trunk. I am not excited about the top nearly as much, to tell you the truth.

Originally I moved this tree over to Show & Tell because I considered it interesting, but not of the quality that is typically suitable for this ATM Forum, which is intended for Show Quality trees, and this one clearly needs a huge amount of work no matter how you go.

Robert wanted to be sure to get Walter's comments, so I moved it back.

Here is a basic cutback. You might make the center cut more off center and from there develop additional branching
Regards,

Matt
