Chris,

Congratulations for a much deserved honor. I'm sure you will put Al's most excellent stand to good use. The expectations bar has been raised ;-) !!!!

Al, Walter & Matt,

Thank you all for the time and effort you have put in to encourage the creation of better bonsai.

David

Thanks David & Thomas!

Here is the tree as of this evening. The bright green foliage has faded to a darker green. It has also been pruned a little.

There is a Quicktime movie of the tree HERE, taken about 6 or 7 weeks ago. Sorry linux users, I only have it in quicktime format as yet.

You can see the tree from all angles, and Walter, you were exactly right when you called the bar branches "apparent". They are exactly that, just apparent bars, not actual bars.

Regards,

Chris.

Chris,
Congratulations, you have a very nice tree, it will be very interesting to watch follow-ups.

Matt, Al and Walter,
Thank you all for the time and effort you have put in this contest.
Although I had enjoyed participating in this contest, I was also somehow disappointed mainly on two points:
I had expected many more trees, especially from these members who express their "master" opinion almost on each tree and never had posted even one tree of their own.
I had expected many more voters, out of 1300 members, only 47 had vote, and if we deduct the 14 participating members only 33 not participating members had voted…
I think we should encourage having much more trees and voters.

On Sunday 07/06/03, my family and I are living for our visit to the USA.
First, we will visit Chicago, we will stay there in Glencoe, which is very close to the botanical gardens, and I hope to visit them few times.
Our next stop will be New York.
I hop this time I will not lose any tree, a month ago on my trip to Toronto, it was one of the hottest weeks in our area for that season, and one day was the hottest day ever in the last 55 years (there are no records prior), and I had lost too many trees.

We will be back on 07/17/03.

Carmi, I have been obsessing over your comment since I read it this morning. If the shoe fits, and all that sort of thing. As one of the none particpating, but opinionated, members of the forum, I feel duly chastized and will make a sincere effort to participate next year. Certainly, I want to do my best to live up to your expectations and to make my contribution to creating the kind of world I'm sure you deserve to live in.

Fred,
Thank you for your efforts to contribute to creating the kind of world you are sure I deserve to live in.
As English is not my mother tongue it is very difficult for me to understand your "High English", or is it?
BTW, I am not familiar with the word "I feel duly chastized ..."

This contest was great fun, and I learned a heck of a lot by being involved. I learned both from trying to style a tree of my own, and from observing the other entries, seeing what worked and what didn't and what approaches folks saw fit to take.

So while I don't feel that anyone has an obligation to enter a tree, while I passionately believe that one can legitimately have strong opinions about art without a whit of talent at producing that art (e.g. me, with classical music) , and while I can see why some would feel that the entire concept of $20 instant bonsai was not "the place they were at" at present, I agree with carmi in that the contest would have been even more fun if more people had entered and if more people had voted. There are at least a dozen regular posters here who could style circles around me, and I would have loved to have seen their entries. It's fine that they didn't enter, but it certainly would have been more fun if they had. That simple.

Lighten up, Fred! No one is picking on you.

You're right, of course, OMC. Sorrry, Carmi. You just caught me at the wrong moment. My lack of talent for this artform combined with my great liking for it is an ongoing frustration for me!

I for one would have liked to have participated, but I wanted everyone else to at least have a chance at winning!!.....LOL

That was a joke.

Seriously, I ran outta time, I neglected to remember dates, and I didnt have my hands on a digital camera at the time. My own camera is borrowed out to a family traveler, and is still on travel.
The material certainly was available. But I couldnt get photo's of it on the forum in time.

I also had to battle sheep, refencing, restoring numbers to my collection (went to auctions etc).

I also want to thank the members who organized, voted and participated. You all deserve a round of applause. I thought for sure there would be alot more participating as contestants as well. But it is new....and I think we could/should continue this annually. Al....step it up this season, and get them router blades spinning!

May I take the time to Congratulate the winners and all of the entries. This was a great idea, and it was done well.

Thank you Walter for your time and effort in showing us your thoughts on our trees.

I must be getting better at this, my trees aren't there yet, but my eye is getting close....I agree totallly with the voting.

Jay
