Q: Only one "Before" Pic available?

I PM'd TreeBay with this question before, but I'm not sure whether s/he checks their messages often, so I'm posting the question here just in case.

I've already bought my tree and styled it. The problem is that I only took one before picture (a front, or at least what was the front at the time, picture). Am I still allowed to enter the contest with this tree, or do I have to buy another tree and take all the required photos with it? Once again, only have one before pic, have already styled and am doing leaf size reduction right now, and I'm wondering if I need another tree because I only have one before picture. Thanks!

A: Just one is OK...

1. A single "BEFORE" picture is acceptable if that's all you have. The original ruleset only discussed a single "Before" photo. It became clear to me in thinking about it that it is really hard to judge the BEFORE front, so I added "top" and "rear" views.

2. We established a single "FINISHED" view just so we can be straight on the final design, otherwise we are likely to have quite a few "I can't decide which view I like better" type entries, so please keep your finished tree to a single view for judging.

Regards,

Matt

Q: Using Prior Purchased material?

OK, I bought a tree last fall and in my newb wisdom immediately put it in a mallsai pot.

Now it's coming into leaf and I really haven't done anything else to it yet. It fits the other requirements of the contest, it was 20 bucks and I have yet to style it.

Can I enter it even though I potted it?

A: Untrained material is OK.

As long as you fit the photo requirements and the trees had not been trained as bonsai, then I see no problem with your ambitions. There were no rules on when the stock could be bought. Never thought of that one! I think the fall is OK. Heck, I told some Southern Hemisphere folks that they could be buyin their stock three months ago for the spring contest here up north. We'll see if we get any from down under!!

Al

EDITOR'S NOTE: Material purchased up to one year ago is acceptable for entry. Obviously we can't allow material that was purchased decades ago to compete, because it's not on the same level!

at the risk of sounding perpetually stupid,
are 5$ rooted cuttings ok to be entered?

I believe the rule is $20 US currency. So if you are useing $5.00 (US) cuttings, you could place four in the piece. As long as they were not pre-trimmed for Bonsai! Hey you could use just one, you do not have to spend $20 just not more than $20.00

Thats my take

How do I post my pics for the contest?

Q: How do I post my pictures for the contest?

Matt/Al ,

This is my first ever entry for a contest. I did read the rules/samples that you included in the thread about the contest and They were easy to understand. I also saw Al's very nice entry, but this is the first time I'll be attaching a picture to my posts. I just got a new digital camera and I need help!

1. When I post my before pictures, do I start a new thread for my front Pic (include vital info and name) and then post replys for the back, top, and finished product one's?

2. Can the finished product picture be sent later after wiring and pruning have been completed and leaves & branches set?

3. How do you actually upload the pictures? Is there a file size and a type that is required.

4. How do you determine the age of nursery material?

Thanks, Sorry for so many

Note from ladybug's husband... After posting this, I gave Lesley a crash course in imaging. She now knows how to create a .jpg, and even created a new avatar as part of her "homework".

So, I answered #3, but she still needs answers to the rest.

Hi Lesley, Yes start a new thread in the currant contest section. use your name as part of the title of the thread such as: Lesley's Contest entry.

Include the appropriate views, before front, back and top. then the finished photo when finished with your entry. Just make sure you enter before the deadline and post the finished pic before the final deadline. The answer would be yes on the delayed posting of the finished tree.

Guessing the age of material for the contest is not necessary, but if you want to know how to do it, good luck. the longer you are in the hobby the better you become at guessing the age of stock. the age of stock from the nursery is fairly easy compared to stock grown for bonsai exclusivly. Most 1 gallon stock will be about 5 years old, while 5 gallon stock could be as old as 10 years, but more probably 8.

Thank You Al!

I'll get my entry in this weekend! Your guidance is appreciated! I guess my 1 gallon Quince is about 5 years old then. The process of getting ready to enter the contest has been fun and educational too! From choosing a nursery subject, studying it, taking photo's, and learning how to use the forum and onto styling, re-potting and wiring. Hope my final product looks decent? I'll have to remind myself that this is my first try and I'm still a neophyte.

I actually bought two trees in case I mucked up on my first try, but I took my time and thought about and planned it out and I think I like the Quince and won't need to use my second choice.

Regards

I have a local wholesale dealer of bonsai and prebonsai. The pre-bonsai are unstyled and untrained, but have the idea of bonsai in mind. Is it ok to use one of them for the contest?

Also, I have special permission to buy from there because I know the owner. So wholesale will cut down on the price. Is that ok as well?
