Okay,

Last year I bought some small Montpelier Maples and made a group with them, but that would count as existing training and would break the rules. Shame.

Soooo, what to do? $20 (or equivalent) ain't much, but then, I suppose that's the point. I managed to pick up a small chinese juniper for a tenner - ($ 15 or so). I thought that it would make a bunjin-gi type mother and child style.
