DiamondLyme84's Contest Entry (reposted)

Here is a reposted thread of my contest entry. I found this puppy at the nursery for $7 in a cracked black pot with hardly any soil. It seemed to be well though and it had fairly well developed surface roots.

Species: Serissa Japonica "Single Pink"
Price: $7.00 (okay, actually $6.9
Before Height: 17.5" tall from soil level
Before spread: 20" wide

Here is a closeup of the before trunk. Unfortunately there are only two before pictures. Also, unfortunately, there were two branches kind of piggybacking the trunk. I tried to use these in the design, but they later ended up just not working and had to be taken off.

And here's the after picture (taken about two weeks ago). I left some growth on the right side to let the branches thicken a little bit. The height will also be gradually reduced once the growth below thickens more.

Finished height: 14.5" high from soil level
Finished spread: 13.5" wide
Finished pot: Black Plastic Nursery Pot

It was probably more of a learning experience than anything else. This was also much tougher to wire: on this, if you didn't support a branch enough while bending it, the branch would just split--on my ficus I could bend branches each and every way with the least bit of trouble. This is the the pickiest species I've worked with in my few months of bonsai; but although I've heard so many people complain about how these are so picky, I haven't had any problems with it. When the after picture was taken, it had 4 or 5 blooms--this morning it had 19!

Oh yeah, the picture:
