$20 Styling Contest - The Rules

CONTEST SUMMARY:

This contest challenges you, the bonsai artist, to obtain and style the best tree you can with a $20 material budget. Use the local equivalent of $20 to make your stock selection, and then work the material to produce the best bonsai you can before the deadline. The stock can be obtained from any source, but it should not have been worked; that is "unstyled for bonsai."

THE RULES

1. Material Selection

a. Obtain the Best plant you can for this project for under US $20.
Any Source. This seemed to be the best idea from the get-go. Not to much money, but a fairly decent plant.

b. NO COLLECTED MATERIAL - we want this to be mainly a styling contest!

c. One Entry per person.

2. The BEFORE photographs

a. Provide a "Before" picture of the tree. Start a new thread in this forum if you will. The tree should also be in original nursery container, and unstyled for bonsai. Previous work would disqualify. I think we all know what that means!

b. The "Before" pic is to be submitted by June 8, 2003. Sooner if you like, it will give you more time to work! The submission of the before pic will qualify you for the contest. Be fair, no exceptions please.

c. For the raw material, please post a front, rear and top view if you can. Assuming you can't tell which side is the front yet, we'll accept your best guesses.

d. Include the following information, if known:

• The tree
• species and common name
• Tree approximate age
• Purchase price
• Unstyled height

3. Work with your Tree!

The sooner you start, the more time you'll have to work.

4. Submit the FINISHED photograph

a. No bonsai is truly finished, unless it's dead, but for the purposes of this contest you need to enter a FINISHED photo so we know how you've developed your material.

b. The "Finished" pic shall be submitted by June 15th, 2003. This will give some time to the folks with a shorter growing season to work for some time on their plant before sending the pic.

c. The first "finished" picture you post will be your official entry. Once again, no exceptions here. If you are not finished with your tree by the time it is time to get it in under the deadline, then send it in unfinished, otherwise you are out of the running. We can accept only one Finished View. Alternate views will be rejected, so decide on your best front.

d. Let us know the finish height.

5. JUDGING

a. Tree will be judged in nursery container or a bonsai pot if repotted. The tree is being judged, not the container. No Virtuals of pot or tree!

b. Popular vote to determine first five places. Popular vote will run from June 16 thru June 30th. Please vote as soon as possible so we can get a fair vote. Vote only once. There will be no exceptions to the ending date this time. Popular vote closes June 30.

c. Walter Pall to pick winners. I have not talked with Walter about this, but I hope he will graciously accept this challenge. It will be a good one. Walter will pick the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd from the five finalists. Matt will post the five finalists for Walter to choose from, and the winners should be posted by the 4th of July or sooner. In the event that Walter is unable to do this due to previous engagements or comittments, Matt will choose the final three. I feel he is more than qualified to do this.

6. PRIZES:

a. As before, I (bonsaial1) will submit a stand to be the winning prize. It will be a custom stand of about 14x12x3" size. Black walnut, and beautiful. Glenn had mentioned a pot for second, and I hope Matt can come thru for third. (in the event I were to win, yea right, I will give the stand to the second place winner and so on)
