Attila,
You are quite right. We openly encourage promotion of other events here.... and as I explained on the AoB Site, it is testiment to why this thread is still here. However, it is also nice, if those members who do post such notices also happen to contribute on a more regular basis to that particular forum, by helping answer questions from younger or less experienced folk. That is then a fair trade-off and helps all. With house-keeping I have moved this to the specific "contest" area, with a re-direct from the GENERAL area it was originally posted in. I will be sure to let you all know over at AoB of the next contest planned here on bonsaiTALK. The "on-line" Bonsai Community is certainly a close-knit specialist sector, and members that view have their freedoms to view and part-take in what ever way they can. Best Wishes, Ian. |

Carmi,
Well, I hope there is nothing going on "behind the scenes" that I do not now about. I did participate in the discussions that led to this idea, we were kicking around different thougths and ways of doing this. But I can give you my word that there was no other purpose than just to create some excitement and a fun game among bonsai enthusiasts. There were no vendors or any commercial enterprise involved whatsoever. Just us, hobbyists. Now we are in the stage of contacting sponsors to offer prizes. This is the hard part. As usual, Bonsai Today graciously offered some prizes that we posted on the website. Hopefully, we can find some more sponsors. Everything else is up in the air. We don't know what the quality is going to be. Hopefully, not too bad. People who can benefit the most, are going to be the artists with winning trees. The whole bonsai community will know about their accomplishment, and this hopefully helps them in their future career as artists. For the rest of us, it will be just fun to follow the whole thing. That's right. But there is nothing wrong to encourage team spirit once in a while. It brings people together. Bonsai people tend to be individualist, working alone on their backyards. So, social skills are not their strength. May be that's why it is a good idea to cultivate this community aspect. If we are neighbours, from the same city of country, let's make a team and do something together. |

Good Grief, what's that supposed to mean? Can't something be done without somone else thinking yet another person has an alterior motive? Personally I think it's a great idea. You are going to be able to see some of the greatest bonsai outside of Japan and Asia side by side. You have to remember something else here as well. The contest is as much about the quality of the photographs as the quality of the bonsai. A world class bonsai and a crumby picture wont be accepted any more than a crumby bonsai and a world class picture. The idea is to gather the best of both, but you don't need me to tell you the rules, go to AoB and read them for yourselves.

By the way, just to add one more info regarding the "team" issue: although the points will be added in order to decide the winner continent, there will be individual winners as well. So, if Europe wins, there could be a case where the best overall tree is an American one.
And the prize will go to the individual winners, not the team. So, individual recognition will be just as important, if not more, than the team winner. |

To say that no vendors are involved is not true.I'm sure that this was an oversite, but if I read the rules correctly,Bonsai Today may have the right to publish these pictures. That should probably be mentioned up front when promoting the contest.I think this is a great idea. It'll be entertaining and a excellent opportunity to see some great bonsai.
