It's really funny, Will has been gone from this site for a couple of months and he is still the subject of an occasional post on this site. This contest was arranged by Will in conjunction with AoB, though everybody is welcome to participate.

Well, Will has done many very, very good things for this and the other ventures he is involved with. I don't believe it was because of the good things he did that he is no longer here. His work on AOB and his written pieces are interesting.
The concept of isolating the "art" component of Bonsai from the horticultural aspects can be very useful in helping folks to elucidate the underlying concepts of trees design. However, in the end, bonsai is a tree in a tray/pot. Some of us perhaps focus too much on horticulture, and not enough on the art. Will has certainly (along with Andy Rutledge and others) stressed that aspect of bonsai. Bonsai Today needs to do something, the reduction in quality of material presented over the past few years is quite apparent. Propagating a new cadre of writers and editors will be paramount if they are to achieve the 200th publication.

Problems at BT
For those of you who don't know this, Bonsai Today is primarily licensed content which was originally published in Japan, and then published as Bonsai Actual, a spanish language version.
Most of the editorial work is done post translation of the Actual articles. They can need a lot of work since there are a good number or details lost when you go from Japanese to Spanish to English! Since John Palmer sold the magazine they have had progressively less US based or "original content" articles because John was really dedicated to chasing down his freelance writers and encouraging them to create new content. They also lucked out that several of them could produce good photographs as well. The current owner is more interested in the catalog and book businesses and it shows. With the proper vision it could be something great, but that might have to wait for when someone else buys them out. |

This is just my superficial impression of the last couple of years, without a systematical scrutiny of the content, but I've never had the impression that the quality of content declined at all.
In fact, the language of the translated material has gotten better. I remember reading those japanese-authored articles a while ago, and struggling to figure out what is the text (accompanying some pictures) trying to say. Wayne is doing a great job, in my opinion. Catalog and book business is an important piece of the puzzle. How would we expect otherwise that the money necessary for a quality content will come? Every quality magazine that I've seen lately (including the Japanese ones) put a large emphasis on advertising and other commercial ventures/partnerships. It's part of the business of staying alive. Nobody will forward the money out of love. |

Wow. Does this mean that BT is in trouble and is willing to pay (more or less) for help.
Don’t get me wrong 50 bucks aint bad for a bonsai magazine. Most pay less. In the US anyway. I am however surprised at some of the comments made here about the magazine. First time I have heard some say anything (no matter how small) negative about BT. Well there are a lot of comments on how timely the magazine arrives but that could be the post offices fault. |
