Work in progress. Mame

Hi all

I would like to hear your thoughts and suggestions on these two.

First off a Premna microphylla. Started 1yr ago, as a tiny cutting.

And the other is a Chinese elm. This is a mallsai that first got trunked chopped, and then airlayered, (PERFECT radial nebari now). All this, since i first got it 6 months ago.

Quite hard to fotograf these smallies

What kind of ideas do you have for developing this little plant? Or are you still waiting for a few more branches to show up before you start serious planning?

Great start. I recently got a premna it is bigger than your cutting but still fairly small. I am gust growing it out some for now. Mine has three pronged leaf like the trident. But it still stinks .
I am amazed at the pictures going around about these at the moment they are definatly great bonsai material.
Do the cuttings strick easy?

Thanks, and yes. The Premna strikes easily from cuttings. The only thing i do to them is too put semi woody cutting in a pot of perlite. When done with that i just put the pot with cuttings among the "mother" plants. No protection at all, only keeping the perlite damp.

Some leaves do remind of maple leaves, but furthermore the premnas growth caracteristics is very maple like.
I think i recall that in the states it is called Musk maple.

Cheers

I think that I was asking about the chinese elm. Are you going to do it like a broom or are you going to create a new leader and have a super taper to it and do it as a formal upright? By the way, the little root over rock is fabulous looking.

Looks to me as tho your doing exposed roots with your Premna, 1st rate job mate, didn't realize that they were so easy to strike from cuttings, I'm crazy about them, have three all much larger than yours so I'm now thinking of that too, thanks to you. What time of year do you start your Premna cuttings off. and BTW, they're commonly called 'musk maples' down here in Holland.

I think i will head towards some kind of broom. It has just started growing quite aggressively, so i will post a pic soon.

Thanks for interest!

The cuttings makes it best in the summer, when warm. But in my little growroom i can make them when ever i want. Probably becuose im growing under hid lights.

I thought it looked a little dry in the first photos - not much new (bright green) growth. Maybe it's just a late start in even Northerner Europe. I find they will explode with growth when kept well watered and exposed to full sunlight.

Nice trees, both.
