Want To Start A MAME

Hey all.

I just joined BonsaiTALK and have gained much information from your site as well as many others. I want to do some mame bonsai due to their portability and petite beauty.
But I have a few questions:

1) I am having trouble finding cheap mame sized pots, (I want to spend less than $5 a piece). I'm looking for some nice unglazed clay ones. Anyone have a good source?

2) What type of tree should I use? I am very open to anything, but I like the flowering trees, preferably something with interesting branch structure and bark texture.

3) I have found lots of info on mame style growing, but any tips will be more than welcome. I haven't done much of anything with bonsai, so I want to get started on a small scale.

Thanks for all of your help!

Greetings.
Two species that I love for mame are Japanese Flowering Apricot (Prunus Mume) and Flowering Quince (Chaenomeles). They make splendid mame bonsai with great character and beautiful flowers. Here is a mame web-site that has photos of a number of trees, including a few flowering apricots and flowering quince. I think you'll like it: http://mini-bonsai.com/indexe.html

As far as pots go, with mame I have actually seen some great deals on ebay.

If you are interested in the Prunus Mume and the Flowering Quince, Brent Walston at http://www.evergreengardenworks.com/index.htm has a few prunus mume and an awesome selection of flowering quince of unbeatable quality at great prices.

Have fun.
Wendell

I don't know how much shipping would be from the US to Jamaica, but try looking on EBay. Some people will sell like 5 or 6 pots for around $10.

Ebay is a rip-off. There is a nursury about 2 miles from my house that sells mame pots for 3 dollars a piece. He has a website, but it just sells trees. I am sure if you e-mailed him he would ship some mame pots to you if you bought enough of them. His website is www.jimsmithbonsai.com. Just click on the contact button and you will be able to email him.
