virtual for my ash sapling

I just put this together to help me see where I need to go.
I'm figuring for a 5 year plan with some time in the ground to thicken up the stem to match the 'green stem' that I drew in.
Its kind of an exctiting project and I got the idea from seeing one of the tiny mames on mini-bonsai.com

well that is part of the plan, as I said above.
It needs major thickening, but do i get the basic style first then plant it out, or should I plant it out this spring and let it grow away for a year then re-shape?

It looks like you might be waiting for a while if you want to train it before you plant. I would plant first then re-shape.

Hope that helps.

So the plan for this year for this tree is to plant it out, feed well and keep an eye out for pests etc.
Next stage is to dig it up next spring and pick a shoot for a leader, as theres bound to be a rash of shoots spouting while its out in the ground.

While you're waiting, here is some good background reading: Garbage for Dinner.

Larry,

Did you even follow the link? The link goes a bonsaiTALK thread that Walter Pall started, a thread that I thought could be the single most useful one for you in all of the BonsaiTALK archives. Walter makes an excellent point there, one that could save a beginning bonsai enthusiast years of time if taken to heart.

Crow,

You can lead the horse to water, but you can't make it drink...

Fish.

If you're planning to field grow, three years is about the minimum period. Five would be much more reasonable. One year really wouldn't provide any benefit.

It is difficult to develop any ramification in the ground, so selection and development of the branches would commence after the tree has been recollected. You might find some stubs of main branches that could be used, but probably not.

Regards,

Matt
