Couple update pics on the chopped tridents.

The third pic shows the double trunk tree I am working on. The growth seen is this year. Who says you can't get good growth in a chopped five gallon can. This un-defoliated leader has grown 9 feet so far this spring. The leader so far is about 1/2 inch and should top at at about 1 inch by fall. I will rechop for taper next spring. The three were defolaited tonight so I could remove wire and re-apply wire for the rest of the growing season. Most of the hard growth will slow down here for the next three months as we move into triple digits this week. The wire put on today will be taken off again in the beginning of Sept. for the second spring push.

The measure tape shows just how large this trunk bottom has flared since I started just 3 1/2 years ago. The original trunk was about 1.75 inches across and now it is fully 4 inches across down at the soil. So far the main body of the tree is just 5 inches tall. Thats alot of taper. This is acomplished by removing a good layer of trunk from the bottom on the repots. I do this with a band saw. It pushes the growth out the sides and flares the trunk big time.

This tree should finish out at about 10 inches tall, a large shohin tree or small chuin.

Cheers, Al
