Trachelospermum

Hi,
I just received my first Bonsai Today magazine and was awe struck by the air layering article on the Trachelospermum tree.(no common name for english) First off, what makes this tree worth $16,000? I'm not trying to argue against it's value, I've just never heard of a plant being worth so much money. Is it just very rare? Is it the tree's origin or history that makes it so valuable?
Second, which did you like best before or after? I definitely like the before picture. I couldn't see any reason to air layer. I thought it looked great. The after air layer pic didn't do anything for me. It kinda reminded me of the "oil spill" type trees. What do you think?

Big Smile Trachelospermum

I couldn't agree more! I had to do a double glance at the value. Maybe there is 14K gold flowing inside of that tree. Personally, I enjoyed viewing the tree as a root o/ rock and was not very impressed with the finished product. I have seen a lot of articles in Bonsai Today that focus on air layering a tree that really doesn't need it. Too much time on their hands I guess. later.

I haven't received my copy yet. Is Trachelospermum known as Star Jasmine? I guess it's worth whatever one person will pay.

Regards,

Matt

The full name is Trachelospermum asiaticum, Apocynacae family. It is a flowering plant and is related to the Confederate Jasmine. What does this tell you about it? Let me know what you think when you receive your copy.

Star Jasmine. This is a very rare plant. These plants are grown in secret growing fields. Once a year they are pulled up from the ground and the rare "Star Sapphire" are taken from the roots. They grow as clusters just like peanuts. A tree a large as this one was, would probably be a good producer of rare stones. To air layer it, will probably stunt its stone producing capabilitys for a season or two. This one looks like the rare "Blue Star Sapphire" type plant.

Now, Any one still looking to buy the Statue of Liberty, I have it listed in the Classified of the Fresno Bee.
