Tomohiro Masumi - Shohin Master

BABA (Bay Area Bonsai Associates) hosted a May 25, 2002 meeting with guest speaker Tomohiro Masumi, Japanese Shohin Master. This lecture followed Mr. Masumi’s series of presentations in Southern California:

Quote:
by Jim Gremel: He brought great 8x10 photos of Japanese shohin and shohin in development. He has a great deal of knowledge and works very well in a question and answer mode.

Members brought their shohin and shohin-in training for review and critique. Note that Japanese Shohin are 20 cm or less (about 8”) in height. In this country we consider Shohin to be 10” or less, so he will look for ways to reduce our trees to meet the Japanese standard.

BABA shared this special speaker with a number of guests, former and prospective members.

A few of the shohin offered by BABA members and guests for critique. It takes a measure of bravery and pride to bring materials to a critique session like this and we were lucky to have a good variety.

This tree was interesting, but too tall according to Mr. Masumi to qualify as shohin.

This trident maple has a good base and movement on the trunk, but the apex is coarse and branches don't look very old. To develop a convincing shohin, the branches need to taper and have a lot of twigginess to them.

Mr. Masumi explained how to create taper and branches and trunks with a series of diagrams. The letters correspond to the illustration below.

A. (This is a view from a branch as seen from above) Explanation of how branches can be developed to have taper and branching (as described above) Branches can be cut back at various points to redirect the growth, resulting in movement and taper in the branches.

(Remaining are side views of growing trunks, or "elevations")

B. Planting a trunk at an angle and cutting back to a side branch is a good way to develop a shohin trunk

C. This is B before cutting. Let the trunk enlarge until it approaches the size of the "finished" shohin in caliper.

D. Growing the tree straight up isn't good. No taper or movement.

E. Repeated pruning can create an interesting shape, by combining taper with changes in trunk direction.

This trident trunk does not have any taper or movement to speak of, but it does have a nice root base.

Mr Masumi's suggestion for this tree is to cut it back hard at an angle as indicated, and wire up a new branch as a leader to form a tapering trunkline.

This bonsai could benefit from a more tapered trunk to give an aged appearance. The branches also are not very refined yet.

When asked to select a pot that would be appropriate for this size tree, Mr Masumi selected the shallow, green one. (He wasn't asked about color ) When asked how it was possible to keep the tree healthy and meet its watering requirements in a pot this small, he explained that in Japan smaller pots are used for show and the training and day-to-day containers are often deeper. If the tree were to be grown in this container it should be placed in a tray containing a bed of sand.

This azalea is very healthy. This is a nice pot, but not really appropriate for the tree. And the tree itself is a little tall for shohin.
