Tom Thumb Cotoneaster

I purchased a Tom Thumb Cotoneaster a few weeks ago and potted it up. I think I may have pruned the roots a bit too much. I read that they don't care for much root pruning. Some of the leaves have yellowed, but otherwise it seems okay.

Any suggestions with this species?

Thanks,
J

I planted one in out in my yard the autumn before last and it's done pretty miserably. The soil is clay, but I ammended it a bit when I planted mine. I don't know, but my Tom Thumb has been a lot more trouble than my other cotoneasters which seem to thrive pretty well here.

Tom Thmb is a hybrid and hybrids are often more finicky. Look at getting a plain old cotoneaster horizontalis which is very similar in look and habit but easier to keep alive and healthy. Still has great red fall color, but more flowering and berries than Tom Thumb.

Cotoneasters do not really enjoy drastic root pruning, they are very tolerant of bad soil conditions though. The horizontalis that Joe suggests are great, very easy to look after and propogate, the leaves reduce really well and it is not too difficult to get them to flower and fruit.

If your interested in the cotoneasters then also look up Wardii and Microphyllus. These are two gems of the family.
