I've thought so myself for years. I have actually saved broken pots to grow stranglers in, inhopes that the roots would strangle the pot and hold it together. So far I'm growing a few in broken pots laid on the bottom of other pots to kind of hold the broken ones for now. I'll grab some pictures and post them here in a week or so.

I also had a strangler and a Shefflera that had grown onto other bonsai and I just pruned them really small to have that effect.
