This small elm was started as a root cutting three years ago. It has seen its first bonsai pot.

I haven't experienced any thing this species won't take except hard pruning. They do lose all their leaves unlike Chinese elms in temperate climates. They respond well to pruning but do not like to be cut back too close. I like to leave two pairs of leaves rather than just one pair. I have seen them dry up and wither when cut back too hard. Sort of like Hokkaido and Seiju. Other than that they are great plants.

Hi Al,
Are you letting the wire cut in purposely?

Hi Al,

As always you bring up some nice trees on to BT, this tiny elm looks promissing, but I have a question for you. There seem to be a reverse taper halfway up its little trunk, or does it look that way cause of the wiring?

As always I really like the photo you've taken of this tiny elm, very good.

Keep us posted when this guy buds out, will ya.

Kind regards, Wessel

http://cru.cahe.wsu.edu/CEPublicati...52/pnw0152.html Has alot of good information on cuttings you might want to check out. It's not aimed at bonsia but you can use the knowledge to help get some trees.

edit: this link has some info on other types of cuttings
