Time To Top The Coto

While doing the show this weekend at the nursery, I found this cotoneaster just waiting to be hacked to death. It has a large sacrifice branch that I wll take out now.

This is the portion of the plant that interested me the most. I have taken the pic at the planting angle that would be most suitable. The plant will be topped out and then left all year to get some branches going. The plant is 3" across where it goes into the soil, and 2" across 1" inch up from the soil. The plant when topped will be only 5" tall. This should make a dandy shohin cotoneaster.

What a great find! Im sure you'll have a beautiful tree there in just a few short years.

Here's an idea to throw at you.....take a load of pics and do a step by step akin to the one done for repotting recently. Not only can we all learn from it, you'll have a nice visual record to look back on.

Here is a pic from today, after some wireing and a little pruning. The plant is starting to show the marks of how a tree would look, at least in the classical style ehh.. Walter?

Who ever heard of training a cotoneaster into a pine tree shape?
Only in sunny California, 105 today, and this thing sits in full sun, go figure!

Not bad for 90 days! Bonsai-al

Wow Al, that's really great. I really am impressed by the progress you made in 90 days.

What type of cotoneaster is it? I guess it's the time of year to go looking - lots of nurseries around here are having pre-fall clearance sales...

I think you mean "OMC, you are so amazing!"

But Al is a pretty decent artist himself.

Cheers,
