Thinking About Mame

How does one start a mame? Does it have to be from seed?

Not at all! There are lots of ways to get going. Layering is a common option.

Kyosuke Gun presents a bunch of lovely examples here: http://mini-bonsai.com/saisyo/saisyo-e.html

Best wishes,
Carl

Ive only been doin bonsai for 5 years now and i started with any small trees i could find because my novice impression was that bonsai had to be small. (i now know otherwise) As a result i now have many small starter bonsai that still require a few years work, but are meme none the less. Out on my travels i am always watching out for one or two year old seedlings, with sycamore being the most abundent. I also have birchand oak that were obtained the same way. I also try growing them from seed, but this is taking ages but there is an alternative. Cuttings are good, but aerial layering seems to be the best. That way you can choose exactly what you want your tree to look like and also get a sublime set of nebari (surface roots) to go with it. I have found this to work particularly well with budlea, of which i have a huge bush in the back garden providing ample material.

Just choose something that matures quickly and keep an eye out for big leaves and long shoots. Otherwise thy're the same as any other bonsai, but smaller.
