Shohin Trident
I purchased this trident maple from Ruben Guzman, out of Danville Cal. The tree was purchased for 75.00$. This was an incredable buy considering the trunk and considerable work over a period of at least 5 years, to bring the tree into the shape its in now. Virtually all the chop wounds are healed and can hardly be seen, except for the differance in taper.
After I bought the tree I began looking for a pot. I was not to happy with the green godess pot the she was in. I went o Bonsai Northwest to look for one of those burnished tokoname's that they sell. I found one that I fell in liove with, but after bringing my tree back in from my truck, the root spread of this trident was to large for the pot. I could have squeezed it in allright, but the roots would not have shown to their full advantage. After scouring the show once more I was over at Mendocino Coast Bonsai talking sith Bob Shimon. I told him what I had and he asked if I had seen Sara Rayner's pots before. I have only seen pics on the net and had not actually felt one in my hands before. Well let me tell you, if you get a hold of one you will not be able to put it down. I picked one out and purchased it. I gave 56.00 dollars for the pot, but I feel that the value is there, and the pot will only increase in value over the years. I have 131.00$ in the tree and pot. I will post a pic of the tree in the new pot , just as soon as the tree pushes its first little leaves. Best regards, Bonsaial ![]()

Re: Shohin Trident
Congrats on the new tree and pot, Al! I know Reuben from BABA, where he used to be a member.
I'm curious how the other side of your tree looks - Say, if the sticker is at 6 o'clock, how it might look from 10 o'clock or so. Regards, Matt

Re: Shohin Trident
Since I have no dig. cam., I will have to wait till the next pic taking session. Since my Wife took the cam. with her to "her" convention with her company, I will have to wait till we get back this weekend. I will meet up with her on Friday and stay with her for free, and play by day while she works and go on my whilwind tour of so. ca. nurserys, unincumbered so to speak. (heaven forbid if she ever reads this, Im dead meat).
I put it in a round pot on purpose, just in case I see a better front when its in leaf. Best regards, Bonsaial

bonsaial's shohin trident maple
I was reading your message from feb about your trident. I also recently purchased one here in Japan from a nursery in Omiya. Beautiful little trunk. I repotted it in the spring, it was really root-bound. Unfortunately when everything budded, the lowest 3 branches did not bud or develop leaves!
Any ideas? Did I overdo the root pruning? Any chance of the limbs coming back? The remaining part of the tree is doing well, though I am getting some browning on some of the leaves that may be due to overheating in direct sun.... By the way, any pics of your shohin trident in leaf? Any thought about the branch die-back? Thanks Peter |

Re: bonsaial's shohin trident maple
Peter: Who are you talking to? As to the dieback on your shohin trident. If the limbs do drop out you may have to put your shohin tree into a growing pot and inarch or thread graft new limbs onto your tree. Anyway all is not lost as long as the crown of the tree is still viable. This is a good example of working on a tree with out really knowing the consequinces of the techniques that you have applied. Give your little shohin good aftercare and hope that it returns to good health. I see that you are talking to Al Keppler so you can strike the who are you talking to question.

Re: bonsaial's shohin trident maple
Hi Peter, If you look at the "Bonsai Talk Spring Show', the first pic I posted of the hoop stand, has the maple on it. I hope you can see the tree OK. As to your problem, You'll never know if the branches were dead before you repotted or not. You may have done nothing wrong. Anyway,, I hope you feel better now. You never know, repotting is very risky business, yet we think nothing of ripping out one of these trees and putting it into too small of a pot, in the wrong time of the year, and put it into direct sun afterwards and wonder why it did not respond flawlessly. I'v done the same thing. Not that you did all these things at one time, but I have known folks who did. If you can post a pic it would be a big help to see the structure of the tree as it is. Maybe one of us could do a virtual of the tree for some ideas.
As it is, I would let it rest the rest of the season, and concentrate on building its vigor for what lies ahead? AK

Re: bonsaial's shohin trident maple
Thanks for the replies.....
Luckily the crown is in great shape. I will take rips advice to heart. Most of the things I read about tridents seem to agree that they don't like to be root bound, and that they tolerate direct sunlight, so I thought I was doing the right thing at the time. But as Al points out, the lower branches may have already died off. I will get a pic of it to see if anyone has any good ideas....and I am going to look for Al's picture right now. |

Re: bonsaial's shohin trident maple
Peter, in your last comment you say Trident's take direct sunlight. I would take that with a grain of salt. In our high, dry climate that can take direct sunlight right now when it is only 50 or 60 degrees. But in August, our sun will fry them even if it is 80 degrees out.
Direct sun on a tree in the ground is real different than a maple in a pot. If you have high humidity and not too hot you may be ok but I would keep a real close eye on any browning leaves and put it in a dappled sunlight location. |
