Shohin Pine

At my January workshop last week, we worked on winter styling of pines.

Knowing full well that this would involve applying wire to every branch, shoot and tip, (and being averse to hard work on Sundays), I decided to take along the smallest pine I had.

Here's the little fella before the wire and scissors came out.

Fish.

After a couple of hours 'work'.

Work, in this sense, involved around 1.5 hours thinking, looking and turning. Actual 'doing' was much quicker. As my teacher says, you must create the tree with your mind, before using your hands. Always a useful excuse, when caught staring off into space...

This tree is now just over 4 inches tall.

And to work on such material - perhaps it helps to have the correct tools...?

Obviously designed for small Japanese children (and I have small hands!).

Regards,

Fish.

That is great work, and those little concave cutters are pretty cool!

Wonderful transformation Fish...It would appear the hour and a half devoted to turning, thinking, and looking, really paid off in this case...It is difficult to tell that it is the same tree...Nice piece of work...

Behr

"The lad done good..." The end result is barely recognisable from the starting material.

I've seen those mini cutters advertised. I might just have to get me a pair. My old ones have cut through too much wire now...

Regards,

TB/Chris.

Thanks for your kind words guys.

Now I just need to:

a. Find a nice 3" pot for it - (close to impossible).
b. Do not give it the dreaded 'Huge Needle Disease' - (that I seem so adept at)!

Regards,

Fish.

Fishman; Please tell me where I can get some of those 'magic' pruners. The ones that let you go from 15 tufts of foliage (before) to 30 tufts (after) just by pruning & snipping. Wow, they also make the trunk thicker too. heyMikey!!

Heymikey

I know this is really anal, but if you actually count the number of tufts, there is eleven of them in both pictures.

Like you, I am also mystified by the trunk. Perspective?
