Shohin Kingsville Repotted

This is about 5 inches tall and was potted in turface, pine bark, and lava rock. Right now im a little stumped on what to do styling wise, but I will worry about that once i know it is comfortable in its new pot/soil.

Heres some pics.

Before.. after, etc.

off topic a little, but when you repotted this did you root prune at all? I am about to repot a Kingsville as well and hear that they can be tricky.

Yes I did, only a small amount though because i believe im a little late on the repot in my location even though ive read that boxwoods can be potted way into summer. They just dont like to be repotted in extreme weather.
You're in Michigan though so i assume spring is soon for you but not yet? correct?

But to answer your question, yes I did root prune, not too much though, you might be able to do more than I did.

Hope this helps.

I'm surprised at the angle you eventually chose for this tree.

Have you thought of slanting it in the direction of the right branch?

Just a couple of possibilities. The first is prety self explanatory, all i've done is fil the canopy out. In the second i removed the whole right-hand section and turned it into a tiny tree. i quite like this

Should i air layer the second branch i would be cutting off? It would hurt losing such a branch (majority of the tree.) I like both ideas, thanks alasdair.

I have no experience with this tree so wouldn't know about it's success from airlayering. But, it suggest you look at the shape of the right branch first and make a decision wether it would have any worth as a tree on it's own. Looking at it, if you airlayer at the yellow and remove the branches circled re, you may have another tree in there. Seeing as the tree is small i don't know if this will be viable, but its a suggestion.

To grow out the canopy on slow grower like this could be along slow project.
Cutting it down to a wee tree is a good option, or think about potting this at new angle, so that the section of trunk at soil level, which is now vertical, would be at about a 45 degree angle. the short branch on the left would need wired up.
