Shohin Juniper

This procumbens juniper (4"H) was repotted this spring and has responded well so far (photo taken 02/02). This is the first time I've gone into a pot this small, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed because the south Louisiana heat will be here soon. It's potted in 60% haydite, 40% sifted pine bark. Currently this is one of my favorite trees. These little guys are a kick. Is this considered shohin or mame?

Re: Shohin Juniper

Nice, I love those little trees

Is water them any different than with the large bonsais, or would you have to do it in small amounts throughout the day because of the evaporation?

Re: Shohin Juniper

You have a great looking little juniper there!
I also like mini bonsai a lot. I think it should be considered as a shohin bonsai,
although you could say it's a (large) shito bonsai aswell.

And to Shambhala: trees in smaller pots have to be watered more often.
This is because the pots are so shallow that the soil dries out very fast.
I have a pot that measures less than 1" H&W and it has to be watered at least twice a day.

Re: Shohin Juniper

That's what I thought, they must have to have more attention paid to watering because of the surface area of the pot and evaporation.

I took some clippings from my new Quince, I may try my hand at making a Shohin Quince

Re: Shohin Juniper

David,
Do you have any old pics left (when the top was still there) or did you buy it as a shohin?
It'd be great to see, what your material was like.

BTW, I've just bought a rosemary and took some cuttings from it (and also some for spice).
I will try to grow a rosmarinus officialis shohin bonsai.
Has anyone tried this before?
Probably not...

Re: Shohin Juniper

I don't have any earlier pics, but this tree was purchased at a garden center as three gallon landscape material. It's been through a couple of style changes, but I think this is final because it can't get much smaller.

Soil Mix?

David - it is time to think about soil mixes for the spring... I am wondering how the soil mix that you specified for this shohin juniper is working out - 60% haydite and 40 % bark??

I found a web site recently where this is the only mix used -varying %'s of haydite and bark. Gosh - could it be that simple?? I would love to simplify all those bins of stuff under my bench!!

Oh - and how is that tree doing?
