Shohin Juniper

Here is a little pro-nana that I got last year at home depot. This is it's first training pot and styling. It had large bar branches midway which I peeled and jinned. Now I don't know if I should remove one or both or what. Any suggestions?

Re: Shohin Juniper

I like the Juniper. It looks like you may be growing it out some, but if you decide to keep it small, you might think about constraining its shape to a scalene triangle, something like this.

The vote here is that one of the parallel deadwood bits should probably be removed, otherwise the tree comes off a little walrussy

Here it is constrained to the triangle. Of course it runs in and out just a little to give it some irregularity. I also reduced the pot size considerably and made it blue to contrast with the foliage, as I felt the color was too similar and a little monotonous. Shohin can be potted in glazed, colored pots, where larger bonsai would be earth or stone colored.

Re: Shohin Juniper

My wife, Kathy, didn't like that last one. She thinks the branch is too long on the left side. When I look at the bend in the trunk I see she's probably right. There has to be some reason for the bend away from the right side.

How about this, moving the character branch to the right side?

The pot is getting even smaller!

In my opinion, a bar branch is a bar branch. It doesn't matter if one or both are Jin. I would go with Matt's vertual, it has a good look to it!

Another nice job, Matt. It always amazes me how a few changes in the right place change the character of the tree so much.

Thanks for the virtuals. It's so hard to just start hacking sometimes unless you can see the results. I'm not that good at seeing the results beforehand. Next repotting I may try Kathy's idea. I just liked that particular branch so much, but I know It really isn't good for the design.
