Today started the next phase of training on this juniper. I decided that some pruning and wiring and a little craving would enhance the plant. This plant still has some time to go and allthough next year it will go back into a show pot, I have to stay on the plant to keep it in shape.
This is the plant and how it looks since the last session. I must agree with Jeremy, that the lowest branch is out of place on this design. I have decided that I must prune this branch off. I have decided that I will leave some jin from the removal to tie in with all the other jins and shari.

I have removed the lower branch and left the stub for jin. The jin was ring barked and the bark removed. When this dries out I will apply the lime sulpher.

In the photo above, the sharies trunk looks heavy and is not uniform in shape. The trunk has some bulges in the lower portion that makes it look larger than it actually is. I have decided that I will reduce the size of the shari by carving, and introduce some taper in the trunk by removing a large portion of the trunk on the lower left of the trunk. The top jin will be deepened and thinned and the split more pronounced.
At the point of finishing the carving for the day, wire was added to the thinned and pruned branches. All that will be left is to bnd the branches into their new shape.

The branches have been bent into posistion, and the work for evening is complete for now. The tree will rest in a shaded portion of the yard for a month, due to the temps here being in the high 90's today. 99 to be exact, and only the first of May. Long hard summer ahead!
Give some opinions on what you think the tree fits catagory wise? Informal upright, or bunjingi? Pot? Thanks, Al

Al,
After playing with lots of pot ideas, I settled on something a bit unexpected (to me, at least.) I would have expected to like a more feminine pot than the one that I chose, probably with ornate feet and outward-flaring edges. Instead, I came up with this. What do you think? -Carl

Al,,,This one sure has come a long way. Nice work. It's hard to tell in the photo, but it appears to have decent surface rootage which is uncommon on procumbens. You have definitely made the most of this material. There is a lot to be learned doing this kind of transformation.
This will be very nice with a little refinement of the deadwood. As for bunjin or informal, I think it's too powerful for bunjin. Best Regards, David
