Shohin Juniper

Finally the little juniper in its pot. This little tree is pushing buds like crazy. I hope thats a good sign, I would die if I lose this tree after all its been through.

Re: Shohin Juniper

Al, this is another great presentation!
I like this little juniper too. If its pushing buds you are in good shape with it.
What variety of juniper and how tall is it?

Re: Shohin Juniper

Thank you Bob, It is a procumbens juniper. It is 6.5 inches tall. Did you see the post of how this tree came to be? It not it can be found on the general page, a few posts ago.

Best regards, Bonsaial

The small tree in the center of the post was a large Procumbens juniper that I chopped down to shohin size. I had posted the whole exercise and how to on the old forum, the text is still there but the pitures are gone. I had done an emergency repot on this tree in the summer of 2002. The tree responded to the repot and decided to start growing again.

Today after checking out the tree, I decided that it had grown enough to start working on again. I pruned back the larger main branches near the bottom and decided that the tree was never going to look like I wanted it to. Th only branch on the left was styled from a branch that was bent over from the right, crossing the trunk and looking rather silly. The whole tree is styled on one branch.

After pruneing off the left branch and leaving a stub for jin, I wired the top and bent the branches into shape. I will probably leave the plant in the grow pot for one more year to fill out the branching and give the branches more shape. I did not pinch this juniper last season as I wanted it to get stronger. The branches have lost a little definition, and need more foliage in the right places.

The tree was styled in a sort of windswept bunjingi style. The trunk needs alittle thinning at the large bulge near the turn in the trunk on the left. The jin will be left there and carved around. The carving will add more taper to the trunk, and make the composition more believable.

During the last year and a half, the area around the small lifeline that nourishes the small leader that makes up the apex of the tree, had begun to whither and die back. I poked at the area and the whole scab of bark that covered that area came off in one piece. Close up of the affected area. The whole trunk is almost all shari now.

Lots of character and a nice job of styling.

Personally I'm not happy with the lower right branch though; it's a bit long and straight. I'd be tempted to remove it when the apex has established some vigor.

Nice tree Al. I had not seen the post before on it.

As for the display, the stone is nice and so is the tree, but the accent is a bit overpowering. I think it might be better off with something smaller or maybe a scroll.
