Shimpaku Juniper (Redux)

I had started this thread during the "Great bonsaiTALK Forum Fire" destroying most of the threads done at that time. This juniper was gangly and in need of some drastic help if it were to be anything in the future. After procuring some books at the local nursery by Kyoski Gun, I decided to take a crack at this chopping back thing.

This was the juniper as it had been trained for the last few years..

I decided to cut the top off of the tree, and utilize the lower portion, keeping the part marked in red.

One "ker-chunk" with the concave cutters, and the top is ready for the compost pile..

The trunk had some great twists and turns, and some shari down the trunk too. I figured I had the makings of something great here.

Carl and I made some virtuals of future possibilities, and where the tree might go..

OK.. fast foreward nearly two years, and I have started to make some adjustments on the future of the tree.

First the branch on the right just did not do anything for me. I tried to incorporate the branch into the future of the tree, but could only see it as jin. That is what I did. I skinned the whole thing like a catfish and figured I would compliment the other jin and shari on the tree.

After the cleanup it was time for some wire. Alot of wire. In fact so much wire it is hard to see some of the branches. Copper and aluminum.

Looking down on the crown.

So far I am pleased with the progress of this juniper. If I get the same growth out of it I recieved last year, It should be a real winner next fall.

Best regards, Bonsai-al

Nice to see this tree coming along. I've got to admit that at first I questioned the wisdom of removing that branch.

I think that with a 10 degree rotation of the tree, it actually works out OK.

Here's a basic virtual (apologies to Uwe, but his recent ATM backdrop was perfect!), changed only by the rotation in planting angle and with the crown brought back part way to compensate.

Cheers,
Carl

That's a nice little juniper, personally I think it would do well in that green pot in the virt's.

One thing I must ask....What was the "Great BonsaiTalk Forum Fire"?

enjoyably,
jim

edit: I second OMC's angle change!!
