Parking Lot Elm

While cruising through the parking lot of a wellknown insurance building, I couldn't help notice all the elm seedlings popping up in the ivy beds surrounding the parking lot. On closer inspection, I noticed that when the gardners prune the ivy, they also prune the elms. I think they use a gas weed wacker, cause the tops are pretty jagged.

Well this last weekend we had some rain. On sunday I decided to make a little trip to the parking lot since they were closed. I found this little elm in the ivy patch.

The ruler will give an idea how small this tree is. They come up from seed that the large trees drop that surround the parking lot. The leaves on the large trees are about 2" long. There is not a leaf on this thing that is over 1/4" long, and most are smaller. In case you can't read the ruler it is about 3 3/4 " tall.

The trunk is a full half inch wide. No taper, but for a tree this small who cares. I will try to repot this in the spring into a small handmade pinch pot for a an accent plant.

I have been thinking about making one of those cool reproductions of a formal room in a Japanese house. Complete with small tokonoma, plant on minature stand, suiseki, and minature scroll. This would be the perfect tree.

Cool find AL. I'm going to have to keep my eyes open for plants like this.
