New Hokkaido Elm Mame

So I was at Matt's Midori show today... I was there for about 5 hours cause I couldnt find a ride back... bleh.. anyways.. on the way out, I found a couple Hokkaido Elms from Lone Pine in 4 inch pots.. so I decided to buy a couple.. ( I also bought a White Japanese Flowering Quince, a White Japanese Wisteria, and 3-
2 3/4" Fuji Cherry cuttings of different trunk sizes [thinking of making a group planting after they finish flowering])

anyways.. Because I dont have any patience, I made a mame.. I think it looks absolutely stunning.. just hope it lives.. LOL

Kazuki,

I hope you don't mind; I went ahead and made a virtual. Here's what I envision for your elm. A 20 degree rotation followed by a bit of pruning and maybe a year's growth and pinching. Now that I'm done and looking at it, I think I'd actually prefer a somewhat broader and less spherical form for each canopy.

Anyway, let me know what you think,
Carl

Sounds good. Here's the direction I'd think to go from my virtual. Comments anyone?

OK guys, now you've done it! I have to go out and get a Hokaido Elm because I like Kazuki's photo and Carl's virt. I was doing so good too trying to wait a few months before buying more material.

Carl,

Heres an updated picture of the little guy.
Sorry for the ghetto training style, im just really cautious of 'wiring him down' thus explains the rocks to tip him upward and the 'u' shaped wires to slightly lower 2 branches. Since the leaves are all gone now, we can get a better look at the branching structure. I pinned down 2 branches to accomodate your suggestion virtual. Sorry for the blurryness, my camera had a hard time focusing on the stupid thing.

Kazuki

PS Lets hope it leaves out this spring. LOL

Looks good, Kazuki! I really like the direction that you're going, and I look forward to seeing how it looks in the spring. I think you're quite wise to choose "alternative" wiring methods with this species. Sometimes you can wire so that a tree can be displayed; sometimes you just can't. No shame in that.

I suspect that you could actually cut the tree back a bit harder than you have, though I don't know for certain, not having grown hokkaido elm myself. Perhaps Al or someone else can chime in here? If this were most other decidious trees, I'd take off a lot more of the little twiggy stuff at the ends. On the other hand, there's a lot to be said for doing exactly as you have done, watching what happens in the spring, and modifying your approach as you get more familiar with the tree's growth habits.

All the best,
Carl
