With DED doing its best to kill of all the Elms in Hollands, is this actually a viable alternative as bonsai here in the lowlands? I've been kinda hesitant in trying them, though I would like to, because they're local and easy to play with...
Oh, by the way, does DED affect Chinese Elms too?

Node

Dutch Elm Disease does not affect bonsai at all as far as I am aware - neither does it affect Chinese Elm.

Just about all the Elm left in The Netherlands are now resistant to DED.

So would I, but it's the middle of winter...

It's looking pretty miserable right now.

Hi Jerry,

Long time since I saw you posting on the forum. Really like your little forest. I think you should remove the curled Elm in your forest and replace it for a straight one. The curled one is better for a mame solitar.
I'm trying to make a Crassula forest in small myself, also trying Crassula in a cap of a soda bottle. Its my way of doing something against the pet tree (bonsai).

Hope to speak to you soon again, maybe we should make an appointment for next spring, Larch collecting??

My 2 Crassula tries are in an other post btw, see:

This sort of thing is also very easy with cotoneaster.

Yes - you're welcome to take some but the trouble is I have them mostly in the ground and all the leaves are off now, so they'll have to wait till March-ish.

I've got some cuttings rooted but they are pretty uninteresting shapes. My experience with cotoneaster is that the most interesting forms come from seed-grown stock - but I've yet to get one of those flower for me...

I HAVE rooted cuttings from that Japanese Quince I brought to show you - so I'm hoping for flowers on those cuttings sometime soon...
