Mame Cascade Elm?

I have this small elm that was without a home. I thought it might be a good candidate for a single tree in a pot but I was not happy with the branches. The tree came out of a saikai that was mixed with hackberries. This elm had no place to go.

I decided that after turning it over and around about 25 times that the best option might be to layer it off and make a cascade tree out of it. I like cascadeing elms and think they make wonderful trees in any configuration.

What made me want to go the cascade route was that the trunk had a good kink in it at the first branch. By making it a cascade it will be a much better tree due to the fact that the trunk lends itself better to this configuration and makes a much better cascade than upright tree.

All the pictures below are pretty self explanatory. I used rooting hormone gel on the Q-tip and the tree is planted in sand.

The bark came off very easily due to the bark floating on a layer of sap right now. The tree in the pot all ready for additional training while the tree is continually shaped. Should be ready for a pot in about 90 days.

Cheers, Al

Very neat! Is this an example of ground layering?

Cool, Al.

I have an elm of similar dimension. Like to see how it turns out.

Cut the layer off yesterday. It had many roots and they were distributed evenly around the entire trunk. One of the cool benifits is the flare that I have been able to achieve with my new method. It is still experimental and I need a few more species to try it on before I go public with it. I figured 90 days but was ready in 60.

The tree was planted up in a Japanese pot. I cut the top back hard to induce more budding at the portion that will be used to build a formal crown on the cascade. Hope you like it.
Al

Nice work Al, I really like it! I'm on the edge of my seat to find out what your experimental rooting method is.

Al

I completely missed the fact there was something experimental about the rooting method. There was nothing obvious from the photos.

Personally I don't care about the success rate with other species Al, just tell us what you did with this one :-).

I'm most likely to try it on Chinese Elm anyway since I have a whole garden full of the damn things....
