Hey, I was wondering... What is a mame bonsai, and how do you create one? |

Re: mame bonsai
mame bonsai are about 1-2 inches high. They are just like other bonsai, except that they require alot of water. Since the soil volume is so small, they dry out very fast and would need up to 8 waterings a day. But the look more than makes up for th extra attention needed. They are very impressive because so few people can do them

Re: mame bonsai
I tried two or three and killed them all within a couple months. They were even indoor trees where I thought I could watch them closely but they just tried out too fast. I do admire those that can keep them alive. I even tried a cactus and succulent and killed them in small pots! Ever try to kill a cactus?
I was talking to somebody that was selling mame pots at a show and he said alot of people actually grown them in larger pots and then put them in the smaller pots for showing occassionally. Haven't tried that but it's an idea. |

Re: mame bonsai
Most of the growers I have seen that don't have the luxury of having someone water several times a day are using some type of capillary matting to raise the humidity around the trees.
You can find capillary matting at ***CHARLEY*** (look for products 6400 or 6414) or you can use a towel under the bonsai with one or both ends in a basin of water. Periodic (automated) misting can help too.

Re: mame bonsai
That suggestion for serissa probably was meant to include adding a layer of pebbles or gravel to the tray and putting the tree on those. You get increased humidity without wet feet.
Relatively few trees tolerate wet feet. Bald Cypress, Wisteria and Willow are a few that can take it. I added a new heading to bonsaiTALK Links called Styles. Within Styles is a folder called shohin that has some nice links to minibonsai sites. One has a how-to. Some areas have humid summers, those seem to be better for plants in general. Here, near San Jose, it's hot and dry. Then it gets windy. But you work with what you have. Regards, Matt
