Larry,

A gentle suggestion based on your ash and the similar birch that you've posted:

I'd recommend that you try thinking of the tree less as the maleable medium and more as a fellow living collaborator in the artistic efffort.

Successful design requires the confluence of what you want and what the tree can do.

Best regards,
Carl

larry, i'm kinda with carl here. why not let it grow some more and show its potential, rather than forcing its' potential in a manner not always fitting its' typical habit
regards
bill

cos i want to make it into a mame semi cascade, i saw the seedling and saw that image. It's thin yet has big leaves , tho they are quite small after being in a small pot all last year.
Why not bend the rules?

Larry, Bending the rules is what separates the boys from the men.

Bending the rules also takes many years of dedication to bonsai techniques and artistic talent. Just bending the tree over the pot for "bending the rules sake" does not a good bonsai make.

The photo of the ash looks like a photo of a seedling that has not been watered for a few days. It looks dead! There is nothing artistic nor bonsai about this plant. This plant is not even good "pop bonsai" nor "Mom bonsai". This plant can not even be classified as "mame bonsai".

The word bonsai here has actually been stretched to the limit and probably broken. What you have here is not bonsai. It is a seedling in a pot, shaped into a grotesque shape, with absolutely no artistic ability, and horticulturally will possibly kill the plant due to taking away the apical tendency of the seedling.

I would suggest studying as many bonsai publications you can find and study the measure of the word "bonsai." I think you will find that your creations stand alone, and with good reason....

Al

Al, its not a bonsai, its a potential bonsai. It will be a mame semi cascade, just not straight away. and it certainly is not dead!
