Rick,
Sure lots 'o people grow super-minis and enjoy it. We have a women in our club who does a display of seven trees on a stand about 6 inches high.
Some ideas for starting out ...Try
1. Small succulents, sempervivium and sedums
2. drop a seed in them and grow the seedling
3. divide a miniture grass (Acorus, armeria) and plant a plug.
4. Try a dandelion from the lawn. They will produce a trunk in time.
5. Any super small cutting of easy to grow herb (Thyme, germander, rosemary, etc.

Get used to these easy things to grow while you look for tiny cuttings of more typical bonsai stock. G'luck

Get ready for a frequent watering program. I think that's the biggest drawback to these tiny pots. Watering 10 times per day in the summer is not out of the norm. Some people let the roots escape from the bottom and plant them in larger pots. When they want to display them they just cut the roots at the bottom of the pot.

Here is a bit of a suggestion you can solve the watering problem by using a small piece of cotton string as a wic. Put it in the bottom of the pot and out the drain hole and then pot any tree that you like that is small enough to go into the pot. Place the tree and pot on a shallow tray and water the tray the string will draw enough moisture into the pot to keep the tree. Water only as necessary. I personally have a green mountain maple that is in about one square inch of soil that is fifteen years old and gets watered the same as all the rest of my trees. It is outside in full sun right now as I havent unfereled my shade cloth yet and the temps are in the mid 70s and is being watered about once every two days. I will qualify this by saying that it is well established in its pot.

Hey Rips?

I was wondering if you could post a pic of how that watering system with the cotton string is set up.
Thanks.....

thanks for the input fellow sufferers, cotton wick idea sounds like a winner. I had a thought today, whilst driving over Exmoor,( DEVON/SOMERSET-ENGLAND) that Heathers would make a good mini tree looking thing. thanks again

Bonsainut,

Do you have any step by step instructions for dandelions? You have piqued my curiosity and now I feel like I have to try it just for show-off factor. I'd like to get started as soon as the dandelions start growing on my lawn. Thanks,

Nick
