Frost Protection Needed?
I have a small silver birch mame in a plastioc 6 inch pot.Should i protect it from frost, as it gets quite heavy here, and the garden is north facing. I can bring it into a cold place thats frost free and light, or should i just leave it outside.
Thanks in advance Larry ![]()

Larry, based on my experience the past two Winters here in the Ozarks, I would not try to protect it from frost but would put it in a place that is protected from wind. My major problems have been clay flower pots cracking from repeated freezing and thawing but I've had no problems whatever with the trees themselves if placed in a sheltered spot and mulched with fallen leaves up to the rims of the containers the trees are in. The first Winter I was here, I lost some trees, but they were all trees that I potted in the Fall and put in a rather exposed place. Mostly, they were conifers, which did not take well to being collected in the Fall. Trees like your Birch should not have any problem wintering outdoors if placed in a reasonably protected place and if the pot is "freezer safe".
At least, that is my experience. Fred |
