Copper wire is essential towards making bends like this work and not look overkilled with large gauge aluminum wire. The tree will now be allowed to reast for the rest of the summer and we'll see what we have next spring. Pinching will continue though, as this will help build volume in the foliage.

The tree is 7" tall

Thanks for checking in, Bonsai-al

Nice design....I like it. What exactly is slip potting? I've not heard that term before.

Slip potting is alot like buying color for your garden. Taking a plant from a pony pak and plugging it into a ready made hole. Bonsai can be done the same way in the non potting season. Just don't disturb the roots, and plant into a larger container by placing in a hole in a larger container.

The tree will grow into the larger volume of soil this year, and I can bare root the tree next season when its appropriate and repot into a lerger container. This way I get a jump on the season, not having to wait till spring to up pot.

Nice job Al. I learnt the lessen of using copper wire rather than aluminium wire the hard way. A literati I was working on, I raffiad and used heavy gauge aluminium wire 5 or 6 mm and had to use 3 pieces of it. You could hardly see the raffia anymore as there is so much wire on it.
