Hello,

Here is a Ficus Benj. too little.Sorry about the light catching on the pot,I just couldn't get around it.The tree stands 6.75" from soil.I am just looking for some styling tips on this one.I have just been keeping it into a "tree" type of form so far.Thanks.

On my recent rock collecting excursion I picked up some slate in the size and thickness...or thinness rather for shohins. My question is does this broom or whatever type of style ok for slabbing? Also I am wondering how much bigger should the slab be than the tree.Should it be like with a pot where usally the leangth of a tree controls the pot sizes,or should a slab be alot wider that the height of a tree?Is their slab rules or a general guide for choosing a size? Thanks.

That looks good to me man, the only thing that's not just about perfect is your anatomical balance but that takes time. Once you get ethe leaf size reduced, it'll be great. Oh and the root,...there is that one lil root that comes out to the edge of the pot in the last 2 pics,...but that can be fixed with just a bit of dirt. The one on the slab is awesome man,...I love stone plantings. Thanks for sharin' and askin' our opinions.

Hi Zen,

The tree on the left is the same tree as on the older post in this thread.

Wesmeister:

I like what you are going for. I thinkk there is good potential here, but I have two issues.

One is the root Zen mentioned. Touching the rim like that gives it a crowded feeling.

The other is the lack of negative space. To me, an important component of a two-tree design is the relationship between the two, which here is cluttered by a big branch filling the whole space. Also increasing the crowded feel. The relationship becomes like siblings in the back seat: "MOM! Billy's touching me again!"

A good point, though, is the over-all canopy I see. Good use of difference in height and size with those, IMHO.

The shape of the slab is just about perfect. Its a little undersized for the tree though. If it were a little longer on the right (looking at it) side that'd put the tree offset and I think it'd look better. I like it though.

Good start on the 2-tree "forest" planting. What they said above is good pertaining to it.

I kind of liked the tree better on the slab but then again I don't know how many times you'd find a tropical growing on an exposed rock like that. I agree with pootsie on the two tree planting. Maybe just a little bit bigger pot will fix the problem or take the tree on the left and plant it at a 75 degree angle falling away from the other tree...
