I think it depends on the target size of your tree. Personally, a trunk with low movement like this suggests that it should continue in the same vein, so I would probably make a couple of chops and reform the apex. in the blue direction. You should get plenty of sprouts from each cut.

Thanks for the suggestion. Your thought lends towards a Shohin tree and that is my direction for this tree. I am reluctant to make such vigorous cuts at this time in the year (just about to enter the rainy season). Would it be more appropriate for the Spring? Thanks Craig |

Yes, early spring would be a good time. Since cotoneaster is a shrub, any time during the growing season should be okay if you have some growing time left. So, I'd agree that now might not be the best time!
