I'm not self centered, Mcspeed said I never been to the NE ( NorthEast ) and I proved him wrong. I have video, surely you guys won't believe that either. Owell...
If I wasn't interested in bonsai, I wouldn't have asked a question that you answered recently. If my Nana dies, I'll have a cold beer and say to my lil tree, you should of tried harder. Corey |

What was it Hector (Repotter) once said about trees not commiting suicide? If they die, you (or which ever individual had it just prior to you, assuming you just got it) killed it.
It's a quote somewhere here.... a true pearl of wisdom. Kind regards, Victrinia |

Vic, I'm fully aware my bonsai's rely on me and only me for survival. I was j/k when I said for it to try harder lol. Just a lil humor is all. I have much more wisdom and determination then you can imagine.

"Thanks all for your intrest. I lived in La for many years and I know 20F can be around for a week or more, is this not a threat to my Nana?"
Have you talked with any of the hundreds of konwledgeable bonsai folk in La. about how they overwinter their trees? There are many world class "Champion Bonsai Dudes" down that way with a wealth of experience--not to mention great trees that can help you out and probably sell you better trees than you get from Bonsaiboy. They can also tell you about how to care for bonsai in your climate and no, Louisiana is still NOT Nebraska ...Some great "champion bonsai dudes" to know in La.: Vaughn Banting is a legend in American bonsai. He's a Lousianan and has been called upon by the National Arboretum to donate several trees there. He's also got some trees in Weyhauser's Pacific Rim collection (on the west coast) too: http://www.vlbanting.com/oldbonsaicollection.htm Guy Guidry has a tree at the National Arboretum in Washington. He owns Bonsai Northshore in Covington: http://www.bonsainorthshore.com/ American Bonsai Society club links-click on the map: http://www.absbonsai.org/USAClubs.html#LA |

A newbie in need

I wish I were him. There's no clubs here in Nebraska, closest one is like a 3 hour drive away.
I took the tree out yesterday for about an hour, it was a nice 46 with no wind. I inspected the leaves and *gasp* ... a couple of darker green spots showed up! Yay! No more of that pale green foliage hopefully. Also aired the garage again as it was colder inside than outside. Couple of things though and I'm sure I'm worrying over nothing. How soft is the foliage supposed to really be? What about branches. Yes they bend, are flexible, but the foliage is a bit hard to the touch? Not crunchy, just hard. Also, at the very base of the branches there's some brown leaves with what looks like new growth which is still nice, green and softer. Also, I ran my hand softly over the foliage [might have done a bad bad thing?] and a couple of needles fell here and there. This was before I took it out. However, it passed the scratch test. Houston, we've got green trunk! I just wanted to check it's overall apparent health. Last edited by fishbone : 30-Nov-2007 at 10:20 AM. |

Don't keep moving the tree around. Decide on a place to leave it and leave it their. Trees do not like to move, that's why they have roots.
Stop worrying so much and poking and prodding your tree. It's not doing it any good.Pale olive drab foliage that is crunchy means the foliage is dead. Flexible green foliage is good. Shedding foliage in the autumn is not unnusual, even for evergreens. |

Mark took the words out of my mouth. You've got to quit worrying about it and leave the tree alone until spring. I've got about 20 trees, 50% evergreen, of varying sizes/quality all mulched together in my garage. Since moving the trees in 10 days ago, the temps in the garage have fluctuated between 60F on a very warm afternoon last week to 25F one cold morning. If we have a normally cold winter here in zone 6 MA., the temps will approach single digits by mid January. If we have a January thaw, the temps will potentially rise briefly into the 50'sF. I open the doors in the morning and close them in the evening for ventilation if the daytime temps are above freezing. With all that said, the only way those trees are getting moved before late March/early April '08' is if the garage catches on fire and I'm home at the same time
. My trees will be fine... so will yours if it is healthy(which is a moot point at this juncture as there is little you can do about it until next year) and you leave it alone. Your only concern is watering as needed, which isn't much, maybe once weekly until the mulch freezes.Last edited by Dav4 : 30-Nov-2007 at 12:04 PM. |

What importance a title

Fish, a simple solution to feeling the need to move your trees around. Buy some really big material. Not just one, but a a bunch. I promise you after the second move, you will have no desire to move them again. This should be a helpful Rx and cure any winter maternal need that still is inside you
