Corey, you are in LA. Place it outside with mulch in an area where it will get some sun. You have a very different climate than Nebraska. In NW Arkansas I keep a few hundred junipers outside without mulch, and we get a lot colder than you do, but I also live with some plant mortality and branch loss. Your thing will be keeping it watered enough- with whichever type of water that you prefer.

Corey,
You talk with "Champion Dudes" yet provide no real useful advice. Who are you talking to? If they're true "champion dudes" they'd explain that local climate dictates how much winter protection is required for certain species. Your juniper requires no winter protection in Louisiana, since it rarely gets much below freezing there for long anyway. Junipers can shrug off short freezes with no problems. They can even get by with no protection in prolonged month long freezes, provided the lows don't get much below 20 F for more than a few days and the wind stays down. Nebraska, where Fishbone's juniper lives, is not Loiusiana. With your global travel experiences and apparent omnipotence to post from anywhere in the world, I'm quite surprised that this hasn't dawned on you. Winter is much more punishing in the Midwest as it is farther North than you. |

Fishbone have a look at Bill Valavanis winter program. On the other site ( oops ) he has just put all of the trees into winter storage in a garage. He is a prize winning dude from upstate N,Y Rochester. I have not joined in as living in Western Australia we do not have a winterizing problem. We do however have very good TAP water. Rockm,
Even though I travel alot doesn't mean I'm a climate genius. But I can say this from experience. I know climates differ around the country and world. I lived in Colorado for many years, if I'm not mistaken, Colo is in the midwest; I could be wrong. There were many times I rode my dirtbike at our ranch in Colo without a helmet, shirt, gloves, jeans, socks or shoes, just a pair of shorts. It was cold but not that cold and the ground had 6 inches of snow, if I remember the temp was about 30 to 40 F. Now, if the wind is blowing 25 to 35 mph; thats a different story. On the other hand, Louisiana has 80 to 100% humidity year round. If you stand outside in La when it's 30F with no wind it will be bone cracking cold with high humidity. I would never ride my dirtbike in La with 30 to 40 F, not even close. The difference is the humidity, not the snow. If it's 20F with 30 mph wind, 100% humidity, well, lets not even go there, it's scary. It may be very true that Nebraska has low temps longer then La, but the question is, whats the humidity year round? Rock, from what I experienced, dry midwestern weather doesn't even compare to 100% humidity, the difference is day and night. My bonsai source says to keep it inside a garage with the pot insulated. The other day when it was 33 degrees here, I grabbed a infared temp gauge and the temp was 6 degrees warmer in the garage then outside. Whats gonna happen when it's 20 degrees 100% humidity with a chill factor of 8 degrees? I thinking of mulch, garage and pot over the plant. Why did you guy's never mention humidity, which happens to be the bone cracker here? I'm not a climate genius, I'm just a bumb who sleeps under a bridge. As a matter of fact I have been to the NE. New York for example. I also stood on the roof of the 2nd Trade Center 10 years before it was hit. Time square was cool, pizza was even better. I also took a tour through the White House when Bill Clinton was president, he wasn't there though, to busy with women lol. I been to the Nation Air And Space Museum and actually touched the Voyger. They had a red sign that said do not touch, well guess what, my DNA is on the voyger. I payed my taxes. I also met the Guardian Angles in NY, if you don't know who they are, I'll be more then happy to inform you. They are a group of guys wearing Red Beret things on there head who fight crime without pay. I also rode on the Circle Line cruise in NY as a city tour. I also have a copy of me in Lion's Park in Golden, Colorado, called The Golden Transcript, it's a newspaper.
Oop's, I forgot to mention I also went to JFK's grave. And the Vietnam Wall. I have video to prove I been to NY, DC, the Virginas and many other places. I'm a lukee dude. Last edited by Pearl : 29-Nov-2007 at 03:11 AM. |

Asus I would advise you not to bag all Americans because of one you dont like. I dont like Elvis but there are millions that do. I do not bag him though just because he was the first crossover artist. This post is getting way off now Pup
