Forsythia is an awesome plant. It blooms easily and has yellow flowers. Bright yellow is such a beautiful color coming out of winter. These trees are truely beautiful guys, thanks for showing them.

Have these vines gone out of vogue? Does no one plant them anymore? I have never seen a large one, all that I have seen have been very small.

Whoa! I haven’t seen this thread for just a few days and I am in awe as to how great some of these forsythias look. I have quite a few growing around my house. There is one that isn’t very bushy and has some nice deadwood on it that literally has a hole through one side to the other. This was caused by a branch being cut off. Since the tree is hollow in the middle, it just rotted so easily. I’ve always found the hollow branches to be a very in interesting trait. As a landscaped tree, I hate them because they grow so fast one of the ones at my house grew 5 feet last year. Another thing is that they are almost like banyan once a branch reaches the ground it will root and the bush gets gigantic. As a bonsai, I think they are great though because fast growing is good and they bend very easily, you can cut these down to the ground, and they still survive.

Great growing

Just wondering, do Forsythia bloom only on the previous year's growth. I have a big bush growing in my yard that my wife dramatically trims every summer, then come spring we have very few flowers. If that is the case, when do you stop pruning to allow blooms in the spring? The reason I ask is because I'm thinking of digging it up since it causes my wife so much misery .

Dan, the type of forsythia I have (afraid I don't know the exact variety) seems to flower only on the previous year's growth. As for pruning, I mostly just pinch back new growth to one or two pairs of leaves as it comes out in the spring and early summer. Anything larger I leave on over the winter to protect against die-back and remove in early spring before it starts to put out leaves or flowers. Good luck if you decide to dig yours up.

Yes Forsythia blooms on last years wood, and so pruning is best done immediately after flowering, so it has time to make new wood for next years blooms. I cut back all flowering branches by a third, which makes for a bushy plant that doesnt get too tall.
