Best Mini Bonsai For A Beginner?
Greetings all,
I'm just getting into Bonsai and since I live in a small dorm room, I'm thinking of developing some mini's. Are there any indoor trees that are suitable for mini bonsai? Secondly I am curious as to which trees are the best for a beginner. I'm looking for something that flowers (or fruits) and isn't too hard to aquire. Of course living in a dorm it would be nice if it could be an indoor plant as well. thanks, Justin |

A lot of folks enjoy indoor bonsai as miniatures. They are well suited to the indoor environment where space is at a premium and also make good use of the grow lights.
Tropicals are the most common choice for indoor bonsai. You can find flowering plants like Serissa foetida and Pomegranate (Punica granatum)that will tolerate an indoor environment. Brush Cherry (Eugenia myrtifolia) is another option too. Remember these points: HUMIDITY, LIGHT, TEMPERATURE STABILITY, VENTILATION You need to keep the humidity up! Humidity trays can be useful, A/C is a problem. When it comes to lighting, most indoor areas are far too dim, and even a sunny window can just get too hot, so grow lights are useful, and they need to be as close as they can be without burning foliage. If it tends to get cold at night, run the lights at night and you can get double duty from your electricity. You can see some of these trees in our ***MUSEUM***. There also have a page of starter flowering bonsai here: http://bonsaitreeplants.com/pindex....ai_trees/1.html I have never bought from them, but it may give you some ideas for species. Many of those shown are temperate (outdoor) species, but the tropicals should do well provided it is light, bright and humid. Regards, Matt
