beginer mame's???
Ok pardon my lack of knowledge in the area of mame bonsai, but I need to know this. I am very eager to try my hand at mame trees. All my trees are shohin trees and are all doing very well. I have not experimented with mame and I know they require a great deal of care. That being the case does anyone have any suggestions on types of trees to start with? Maybe a tree that’s a little more forgiving during the learning curve?
Cheers, ~Jay |

I like dwarf honeysuckly, Lonicera Nitida. It grows quickly, has tiny leaves, has interesting bark, and is easy propagate from cuttings. It also likes to be quite wet, which is good because you can put the mame pot into a sand tray and the sand will even out the dampness and keep it damp all day.

Thanks Joanie. I am sad to say that the one mame I had was a dwarf Kingsville and due to the bronzing during the winter my wife thought it was dead and tossed it, pot and all!

Joanie, yes, very good choice - and as a bonus they keep their leaves all year round. Probably the least well used for bonsai. I'll post some photos of what I've got. Additionally I suggest Cotoneaster - just repotted three 10-12cm (4"-5") trees today . How big is Mame again?

Hello all,
I went out and picked up forsythia this weekend, I was looking for a dwarf honeysuckle but couldn’t find one. It’s still a little early around here to get good stock. I am going to be repotting this in a week or so into a smaller training pot but I had to cut it back pretty far as the shoots were about 3 feet long each and wanted to give it time to rest. I heard that they do back bud really well, is it true? Cheers, ~jay |

It's a bit late to be asking that now isn't it? :-) Yes, they bud back. Got any photos?

Good point! Ha ha. I will post some pic’s a little later tonight but not without this disclaimer first. This was purchased from a nursery and is by no means bonsai! It will be a long time before its even close, but with that said, I’m in no rush. I do like the flowers and think that this will be a very big “project” as there really isn’t anything interesting about it. Maybe later I’ll air-layer or something, but for now the goal is to keep it alive and well. I’m planning on reducing the root ball but I want to do it in baby steps as I know nothing about these and it’s a learning experience for me. With that being said I’ll try and put up some pics tonight.
Cheers ~Jay |

Hey Matt,
Well i said Chicago but really the western burbs. Love your tridents! I have a few tridents i'm currently training in grow boxes but two of them should be ready for a pot by next year. Are you involved with any clubs in the area? Cheers, ~Jay |

Lonicera as promised. A small scene planting - inspired by the work of Treebeard and a "found" Lonicera planted in a pot which looks like a rock... All are Mame and in desperate need of cleanup - but I'll wait until the real growing starts in a month or so.
