Some more Shohin size bonsai in training:

Two Cotoneasters about 5 years old from collected 1 years old seedlings.
A Zelkova from a 1mm cutting - also 5-6 years old.
A Hillier Elm from a cutting - initially grown in ground and chopped multiple times then all branches grown in 2 years. Can't decide on front. Needs root work.

Last photo shows the size of the trees , I think they are all under 15cm.

Thanks for the complement, I appreciate it.

Actually I am getting more and more "into" the little ones - which is due to a few reasons:
- I like the gardening/growing aspect of bonsai - so I like to grow up from cuttings and not cut down from big trees. I want to grow not buy.
- I don't have a lot of access to natural Yamadori - but I do find a fair number of Urban Yamadori - but they are typically small, like the two cotoneasters.
- I don't have a lot of space to grow big trees in...

Jeremy,i too prefer the little ones and I share your ideas as regards growing not buying etc. But you can also make some really neat Mame/shohin from large plants chopped back really hard.

I am not sure about any special techniques regarding Larch, beside the well known grow and cut back technique. One thing to mention though is that the way to fatten the trunk on conifers mostly is done by letting the top branch grow freely for a time, on deciduous it often is a lower placed side branch that is used.
If you use a side branch on conifers the scar left by the sacrifice branch is very difficult to deal with, even as a Jinned branch.

My Shohin book will be available all over the world through Stone Lantern Publishing i.e.

Finally I got a single purple berry on one of my trees - it was on the backside of the tree - so I never saw it (or the flower) until I turned it.

This leads me to believe that my constant pruning has been removing the flower buds.

When do you get the flowers and on which growth?

Jerry

Hi Jerry

You are rigth, that constant pruning will remove flower buds and thereby flowering and fruit bearing branches will be lost. Most flowering trees and shrubs flowers on two year old branches. This means some branches must be allowed to grow with only a little or no pruning from midd summer until winter in order to flower the following year.

Maintaning flowering bonsai are not easy, because you always have to decide between flowering purposes or maintaining the shape of the branches. You cant do both at the same time, so you have to balance between these two actions.

The Lonicera also flowers on the two year old branches, so prune little or nothing from midd summer to develop buds for next years flowering.

Regards
Morten

That's going to be tricky considering just how fast these damn things grow...

Thanks for the info.
