Bald Shohin

It took a lot of guts to post this thing. I started with a pencil size tree from Minature Plant Kingdom. I planted it in a five gallon can, in a 50/50 mix of sand and steer manure. I let that go for one year. It reached about 1" in diameter. Last year I put the whole thing in my koi pond. It reached the size you see now. This last spring I took it out of the five gallon, cut the roots and rammed it into the dish that the trident maple I bough came in. That was is Feb. 2002. I cut the trunk down to 10" tall.

I jinned the top and carved it up a bit. I decided that I wanted to have a live top though, and in June bent up the new leader. I trimmed the bottom tier of branches and pruned off the top branches. I wanted the bottom branches to have a half year head start to get the proportion right. In good design the upper branches should be smaller proportionally.

Well here we are in stage two. The top branches have grown, and look more in scale with the bottom branches. I have bent them in the wierd shape for personel reasons. I seen branches bent this way by Tim Kong in the East Bay Bonsai Society. They look funny now, but as they mature and get thicker they have a character all thier own. He mostly uses this technique on redwoods.

We can have a look at the nebari on this plant. I have paid special attention to get the roots spread early on. I planted the tree on a couple of bricks in the 5 gallon container. Some of the roots had pushed out of the soil and started to show loops, or the beginnings of knees. I cut them off. How cruel.

The bottom of the trunk measures a conservative 1 3/4" across. Not bad considering the complete tree is only 12" tall. I will probably finish out at about 10 to 11 inches tall in the end.

Looks like you have the makings of a nice redwood on your hands.

Hey - thanks for sharing it - I gave up on my "worst effort" thread - there were no takers!

Al - did I read that right? You put it in your koi pond? Is this a new fertilizer program - a secret fish fertilizer regime?

Seriously - the tree is looking like it has a future! Are you planning to reduce the jin as the new leader becomes more established?

Hi, I'm wondering if this little guy is still around. I love bald cypress and would like to see how your tree has progressed.

Thanks,
Ed

I knew it, I knew you were going to do it since you mistook the baldie for a juniper.
