Why no Burt Davyi ficus bonsais?
I bought a couple of small Burt Davyi Ficus at the Spring festival at the local Japanese Gardens few weeks ago. I stared looking on Google for info or pictures of bonsai to get styling ideas but I'm having trouble finding any good pics. is this type of ficus hard to make into bonsai or what.

Ficus Burtt Davii make great bonsai trees. They usually have an abundance of branches for styling. Treat them like any other Ficus. They often grow like they want to be a cascade but can be trained in a semi formal upright.
They have an abundance of little figs which gives them an added attraction. They are a fun fairly easy tree to use as bonsai. Hector

Hi All,
Funny you asked. I have two sitting in my back yard right now as part of a shipment recieved from Florida for a George LeBolt workshop next week. One is a dwarf and one a standard. They look like great material and I will choose one of them for my subject. If you would like I will post photos for you. "Hard to find and expensive over here... Over 15times the price of normal ficus. Thats why you wont see 'm here!!" Andy, thats a surprise. When I looked them up on the net native location was given as South Africa. Maybe you could collect some wild ones. Good growing, Bob O

Hey bob O, yeah i know, unfortunately its a big country and these little babies grow absolutely miles away from me! By the way the have been a few new species of ficus disovered that are similar to the burt davii so am keeping my eyes open. All collectable material is being swiped. and then sold at huge prices (over 800 rand for some material) by the way divide by seven to get dollar price!!
Well maybe i should take a holiday and come back with some material. Will see |

BMBeyond,
I have one in my gallery, by no means a show tree though. I got it very cheap at a local show here in Illinois. I love it but you really gotta watch out for insects!!! i lost a pretty major branch while i was on vacation and the neighbor baby-sitting my trees didn't notice what was happening... ~ Jay |

My First Burtt davyi
Hi guys,
As I promised back in June here are some pics of my newest ficus. Dwarf South African Fig (Ficus Burtt davyi "nana") 1st- as it looked before work. (it was covered with scale, but none now) 2nd- fat little trunk, about 2 1/2 inches wide. 3rd- about 3 weeks after working, about Aug. 1st 4th- as it looks today. 5th- A look from above. It stands about 10 inches above the pot rim and is about 16 inches wide. I still have much to do, the pot is not the final, it has a reverse taper & no decent surface roots. I planted it deep and scored the trunk & applied rooting hormone where I need to get surface roots. I also managed to get a few cuttings to strike & look forward to having some mame fun with them next year. I really like this tiny leafed variety of ficus. All comments/suggestions are welcome. Bob O
