Where is Jerry Meislik or What Fig Is It?

Is Jerry Meislik here? I need to identify this fig that was given to me. If I knew what it was, I could find out if I can prune it past the foliage to REDESIGN its "canopy."

ficus microcarpa - golden gate fig would be my best guess. I have two in my gallery you can compare it to.

The bark leads some to call it a tiger bark fig.

Could be one of several different figs. Exocita, golden gate, phipipensis, even the benjimina.

Maybe Jerry can be of more help when he gets back. Last I heard he was , I think, in Taiwan

Ficus microcarpa can be a lot of ficuses. All the way from the green island to the retusa.
Microcarpa only refurs to samll leaves in this case

Since the golden gate was somehow vague let me be more precise...

Ficus Retusa Var.. Microcarpa (also sometimes called Chinese Banyan)

Hope this helps Ron

Sooo...is it possible to get it to bud back on the branches closer to the trunk, or am I stuck with leggy growth until I get willing to learn how to do grafts?

In the spring you can whack away at most ficus. They almost always will bud back closer to the trunk on a branch. One notable exception is the benjima. And I don't think what you have is one of them. Keep the terminal buds cut back and this spring rip that little succor up )

Just reread this post and my last post sounded like I was writing with an attitude, that was not my intention, my apoligies if it was taken that way.

You're right Ron, ficus do bud back easy, ficus bennie is a little harder but I have had success with them as well, humidity is the key.

My ficus are now adjusted (finally) to their indoor home, this is the time of year that I will wire and shape them, I will do practically no trimming, pruning at all until spring hits and they are accustomed to outdoors once again.
