Tropical Potensai Questions
I'm looking for a suitable tropical candidate as a companion to my mature Ficus. I greatly favor the trees that change appearance throughout the seasons (such as the outdoor Crabapple when it bears fruit), but I don't know which indoor trees do this. Any ideas? I think the Bougainvilla is beautiful, but I'm not sure, the colors I see in pictures, do they stay the same color all year round?
I'd like very much to find a potensai just past the seedling stage, so I can enjoy all the syling and training. Do regular nurseries carry such stock, or do I need to visit the specialized Bonsai nurseries? Also, I know that young outdoor stock should be maintained for a year or so in regular 2- and 3-gallon pots, and I understand the reasons for this. It seems like this would be also true for an indoor tree, but what does one do about pots? The inside of my home doesn't really accommodate several large pots, with drainage and everything. And no way could I build a greenhouse! Am I limited to outdoor potensai? Thanks very much.

Bougainvilleas need a lot of light? How much light do you have available?
I have to confess I don't know where Lynwood is so I can't give you any tips on sources for material. Every nursery is different though. I have seen pomegranate starters - but that is another relatively high light plant. They can bloom almost continuously in the right climate. When it cools down, they stop blooming. You can develop your plants in growing containers for awhile, or in bonsai pots. One reason for leaving them in larger containers is that the root system needs to be conditioned to be compact and dense. Another reason is that your trees will grow more slowly in the confines of bonsai pots. I hope that answers at least a couple of your questions. Regards, Matt
