Training Pots?

I have seen the term "training pot" in a number of articles/books but I never really came across exactly what it is. I understand that it is deeper than a regular Bonsai pot, but is it a deeper Bonsai pot, but nonetheless a Bonsai pot, or is it a regular plant pot?

Also, when and how is it used?

Abe, Training pots are larger than the pot the tree will eventually be growing in. Not always deeper but bigger. It can be a wooden box , a plastic tub, a large cut down nursery container, etc., or even a bonsai pot. When a tree is in the beginning stages of training, more roots will help with quicker and more vigorous growth. Depending on the species, the tree will be moved from the training pot to one more in proportion to the tree, when the basic structure is achieved.. this includes rootage, trunk size, branching, and any other attribute which may need long term growing to achieve. Hope this helps answer your questions.
