fairy penguins or little penguins?

apparantly we are not allowed to call them fairy penguins anymore, but yes they are here but not up where I live.

For what its worth, my junipers live outside

have a nice day

FIRST POST!!!!!!

anyways, my second bonsai arrived the other day, it is a small juniper, young, looks very healthy, i'm keeping it in the pot it came in for a while, maybe repot in a year? anyways, i bought this plant because i have read several times it can be grown indoors and does well. Here in Ohio it is starting to get cold, so I'm keeping indoors through the season. But was buying this tree a bad idea? I definately want indoor bonsai so should I try something else?

If you want indoor bonsai get tropicals they are the only ones that can successfully survive inside. a juniper inside will die period because junipers NEED to go dormant and that means it has to be temperatures lower than, i would say, 40F. So i would definitly suggest tropicals if you want them indoors. They should be brought outside in the spring so they can grow.

edit: I shouldnt say that it needs to go domant its just that it need specific enviromental conditions that cannot be given to it on a dining room table.

Here's something to think about, though. A man from Puerto Rico, who is a doctor named Samuel (a student of Pedro Morales) told me that he keeps junipers alive inside, in his hot climate. He has a cooling unit of some sort, and grow lights. I didn't think to ask him how long they have survived, but he seemed pretty confident about it. However, it sounded like a fairly expensive and elaborate system.

You should be ashamed, Joanie! Giving the newbies something like this to cling to.
Junipers. Outside.

Yes, you're right, I shouldn't have mentioned it. But if they really want to play around with expensive cooling units and grow lights, maybe they can get their junipers to live indoors.

The easier way is to spray paint the juniper green. Your styling options are limited, but you can go on vacation without worrying, and it looks so peaceful up there on top of the TV.

Joanie, if we follow your suggestion we can save money on tools...wire... fertilizer... heck we can actually have a 'finished' Bonsai.

People have been talking here about junipes as if they were all temperate zone plants. That is what I thought too, until about 3 days ago.
I've been reading up on juniper taxonomy, and I've found the following.
J. brevifolia-Azores Juniper
J. cedrus-Canary Island Juniper
J. angosturana-Mexican Juniper
J. barbadensis-West Indies Juniper
J. bermudiana-Bermuda Juniper
J. convallium-Mekong Juniper (Viet Nam)
J. procera-East African Juniper (only juniper with a natural range crossing the equater.)
I know, none of this applies to this discussion. Two reasons:
1 None of these are readily availible to those on this group.
2 All of these are still high light plants, as in full sun. Still not indoor plants, unless you can afford pricy lights and a high electric bill, which some can but not me.
I do wonder why people in the tropics aren't growing juniper bonsai, since adapted junipers are availible. Or are they just not showing them? Maybe just too snobby to show us their good trees.

Juniper + indoors = dead plant

This is an unforgiving equation. People just want to believe otherwise.

If you're reading that juniper can be kept indoors, start reading elsewhere. It's not true. If you're reading this on the instruction sheet from the vendor you bought the tree from,--consider the source and the motive for saying it. He was trying to sell you a tree--saying it will live indoors easily is part of a sales job.

A reputable bonsai seller would never tell you that.

I was reading growing directions on the mallsai at a local big store. The mallsai included juniper, money tree, box, and scheflera. Others too.
Directions were all the same.
I would have laughed, but I was really sick to my stomach right about then.

But for anyone who really wants junipers indoors, I rememeber back in grad school, where I was studying wheat breeding. There were growth chambers in the basement, with temperature controle, humidity control, lights on timers, lots of lights. All the timers were the kind that could adjust over time, as in not only the lights went on and off, but at "night" the temperature was different from "day" temperature. This was at Kansas State University, known world-wide for it's winter wheat breeding.
I'm sure a juniper could be made happy in there. And for a heck of a lot of money, you can have one too. By comparison, my consultation fee will be cheap.
